Far from suggesting that we should expose ourselves to the sun at any given chance and not take proper precautions, a new study has suggested that having some sun exposure may help to reduce blood pressure and thus cut the risk of heart attack and stroke. Wearing sunscreens and other topical skin creams is highly advisable to protect ourselves against skin cancer, but this new research also shows that sunlight alters levels of the small messenger molecule, nitric oxide (NO) in the skin and blood, reducing blood pressure. The research was carried out at the Universities of Southampton and Edinburgh, and published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, and the authors suggest that minimising sun exposure completely may be disadvantageous by increasing the risk of prevalent conditions related to cardiovascular disease. |
